Educational attainment, now mapped by barangay.
Demographic Dive returns to focus on the highest educational attainment of the Philippine population. Education is often among the most important things Filipino families cherish. Nevertheless, there is still much which needs to be done in improving access and equity in our nation’s education system. This map is a testament to the deep divisions which have shaped Philippine society.
Behind the Map
The map focuses on educational attainment of those age 25+ and direct relatives of the household head. In line with the World Bank’s education data, the age 25+ was selected to only include the population which has likely already completed their education, excluding the presently student population. Only direct relatives of the household head were included to better approximate the voting population of a barangay.
However, the map lets you toggle between Relatives, showing only those directly related and All above 25+ without filters. The % maps show the bin the barangays by %, while lead merely shows the dominant educational attainment in a barangay.
You can also toggle between granular vs grouped. The grouped data groups those without an (No formal education to HS diploma) as a single category, and those with at least a Bachelor’s as a single category. You can see a comparison below.

Grouped

Granular

This map comes with two kinds of pop-ups, one for the grouped which can be shown by hovering over a barangay and when clicked a side-panel which shows the granular data.

I hope everyone enjoys the map! If you’re curious about the electoral implications of the demographic data, stay tuned for what’s coming next 👀
